That’s funny. If you think focusing on those who have believed in this country’s ideals so much that they fought their own countrymen to make them real is delegitimizing, then you and I have *very* different ideas of patriotism than me.

one of these days i will write about how nearly every “modern” criticism of the founders on race and slavery was levied against them at the time by contemporaries on both sides of the atlantic

I think those of us who spend our time immersed in this history can take for granted how transformative the #1619Project is. How it has given so many people who haven't been exposed to these stories the language to name what they have long felt but didn't exactly know how to say.

Since we're talking about the relationship between slavery & our founding fathers, it's worth remembering that 12 of our first 18 presidents were themselves slave owners.

I’m glad to see so many presidential candidates recognizing the need to take the clemency power out of the Dept of Justice, which reflexively says no to almost every request. A president can & should use this power robustly. And this is a promise that doesn’t require Congress.

The same people complaining that the 1619 Project focuses too much on the role of race in shaping our country also oppose any effective civil rights law enforcement now. That's not a coincidence.

Teachers: make #1619Project your next unit plan. Managers: make #1619Project your next team retreat pre-work. Pastors: make #1619Project your next sermon. Parents: make #1619project your next dinner table conversation. True history. Finally. Thank you forever, @nhannahjones.

Spent today at a plantation in Louisiana that often hosts weddings. I sat in the gazebo where ppl exchange vows & was struck by how a place could mean something so different to different ppl. How a place that represents so much pain for me can be a site of so much joy for others.

It is deeply painful to me that anyone has a problem with black writers wanting to mark and commemorate the most atrocious thing that has ever happened to our people, which is the start of our enslavement here and what it has meant. How does this possibly equal erasure of others?

The Boston Public Library needs your help to turn their collection of handwritten correspondence between anti-slavery activists in the 19th century into texts that can be more easily read and researched by students, teachers and historians. https://www.antislaverymanuscripts.org/

NYPD questioned a boy, offering him a McDonald’s soda. When he left, they took the straw and tested it for his DNA. It didn't match crime scene evidence, but his DNA was entered into the city’s genetic database. To have it removed, the family had to go to court. The boy was 12.

THIS is a lie. COLIN never spoke to Jay-Z and NFL ahead of that deal being done. They NEVER included him in any discussion 👉🏽 https://twitter.com/tmz/status/1161702038389968896?s=21

How do you walk through a door someone else opened and not even talk to them first? Not plot *with them? Not follow their lead? Can you imagine what a powerful duo we could have had, had Jay’s FIRST call been Kap-and they approached the league together? Sadly, we’ll never know.

This is thing that makes me saddest about this Jay Z/NFL situation: Jay came in to benefit materially and directly from everything Kap risked, lost, and sacrificed. Kap lost so much-and Jay swooped in and put all Kap lost in his pocket. That’s the hardest part to swallow.

Reading through interviews I did with a man who served 43 yrs in prison for something he did when he was 17 & I just find myself overwhelmed & infuriated by the idea that ppl think putting someone in a cage for four decades for something they did as a child is ever a good thing.

Say a butterfly had to die for you to get a gift. / There must be some kind of prayer in that. / I want to know how you feel about capture. Today's poem is "Directions To Finding You, Or Maybe Just An Inferior Prayer" by Angel Nafis https://bit.ly/2TscAcU

This is my second poem in the #1619Project. It concludes the issue and is wrestling with how black people were portrayed in the national media following Hurricane Katrina, especially those in the Superdome. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/08/14/magazine/1619-america-slavery.html

I have two poems in the new #1619Project for the New York Times Magazine. One is about the Middle Passage & one is about Hurricane Katrina. Here is the first. And truly, you should read the whole issue. All of the essays, poems, & fiction. It’s stunning. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/08/14/magazine/african-american-poets.html
