@NaomiOreskes @drdavidmichaels @fastlerner This is far too true. And the corrupt science then gets disseminated by front groups and media allies. "The public has been burned by conflicted or corrupt science too often, in scandals involving a wide variety of products, from asbestos to diesel engines to pesticides."
How dangerous is the #vaping crisis? #GWSPH Professor @drdavidmichaels was on @FRANCE24's The Debate to talk about the growing issue: https://www.france24.com/en/debate/20190912-generation-vape-how-dangerous-are-e-cigarettes-0?ref=tw_i #publichealth
@drdavidmichaels Agreed. And the toll seems to be growing retrospectively to some extent. How many adverse cardiovascular events have occurred in association with vaping? These revelations don't simply occur overnight--it takes time and $ to connect the dots.
A very provocative discussion. The Europeans claim that there are no cases of vaping-related lung disease there because of strong regulation. I hope they are right, because the toll here is large and growing.
The idea of industry funding this much needed research but having no other role ("then get out of the way" as Dr Michael's suggests) could be helped by having a third party act as firewall. @uicc did so for the @IARCWHO led collaboration studying mobile phones and cancer.
The vaping crisis underscores the need for independent, unconflicted research. Facing concerns their products cause disease, corporations often take the tobacco road and hire scientists paid to conclude that the exposure is safe. Here's my proposal:
Join us tomorrow Sept 10th for an important side event to the @UNHumanRights Council #HRC42 “Toward the safe and healthy work as a fundamental right at work” Speakers from @EU_UNGeneva @FinlandGeneva @ilo @WHO @IUFglobal and more!
This is a heartbreaking sign of the times: an entire journal dedicated to (analyzing) misinformation: https://shorensteincenter.org/about-us/areas-of-focus/misinformation/the-misinformation-review/ @MaibachEd @STWorg @johnfocook @thackerpd @ErikMConway @dwallacewells @drdavidmichaels @MichaelEMann @DoctorKarl
The @NFL does not have a good track record on using science for policy. For years, it used conflicted, unqualified physicians to deny the epidemic of brain injuries among players and disparage the credibility of @bennetomalu9168, who first identified CTE in Mike Webster's brain
Will the NFL allow players to use marijuana? League wants science to determine drug policy. That would be refreshing. https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2019-09-06/nfl-considers-cannabis-for-pain-roger-goodell-drug-policy @ErikMConway @drdavidmichaels
Excellent summary of @Sharon_Yadin's work on "shaming"- government release of negative information about a private entity to correct market failure & advance social goals- a badly named but effective strategy to achieve regulatory goals quickly and cheaply
Human rights of workers depend on the prevention of exposure to hazardous substances. 7 of the principles are on duties of States & responsibilities of businesses to prevent exposure. #workers #humanrights #toxics #HRC42 #Geneva photo: @gcwingman @GettyReportage (thread 1/4)
Twenty-eight years ago today, twenty-five chicken processing workers were killed when fire swept through the Imperial Food Products Company plant in Hamlet, N.C. A grease fire started on a chicken fryer and spread quickly inside the Imperial Foods Products building.
"The trend isn't statistically significant yet" is not a scientific argument. It took a decade before the rising trend in fire frequency in Canada was statistically significant. Insights don't come from correlative models. They come from biophysical causal/process models.
Fuyao's ethics are certainly questionable. In the middle of an OSHA inspection, our inspector just disappeared. Fuyao had hired him! We had to threaten to go to the IG to get his notes. Needless to say, we found many safety hazards. #AmericanFactory
This is an important report, well worth reading and circulating.
Hitler’s rise teaches us that the establishment trivialises demagogues at its peril. US Republicans & British Conservatives tolerate leaders with tawdry rhetoric & simplistic ideas, just as the Weimar establishment tolerated first Hitler & then his dismantling of the constitution

It is great to see DOJ pursuing worker endangerment, but since corporations do not actually go to jail and $2.1M is petty cash for this large publicly traded firm, a stronger punishment is needed. A better solution: ban @cjenergy from work on public lands.
OILFIELD COMPANY SENTENCED IN WORKER DEATH CASE - Company Ordered to Pay $2.1 Million in Fine and Restitution, Enters Probation -
Factory owner spends millions on lawyers rather than fix a metal press that took parts of 3 fingers. Judge assigns almost $1m fine. Obeying worker safety law would've been cheaper and humane; recalcitrants are why we have job safety regulations:
First, there were lessons from the lead crisis in Washington DC. Then there were the lessons from the lead crisis in Flint. Now Newark. When will we actually learn these lessons & do what is necessary to stop exposing kids to dangerous levels of a neurotoxin? Thanks @MonaHannaA
Important to note that industry sponsors also directly paid the publisher of the journal for inclusion of the papers. Readers need clearer labelling of sponsored articles in scientific journals and databases e.g. #pubmed @nlm_news @careygillam @drdavidmichaels
Terrific new paper by @PerlmanRebecca: "because regulators frequently rely on those whom they regulate for information about the products being regulated, private actors can capture the regulatory process without needing to capture the regulator himself."
Blockbuster story of academic publishing intrigue. In this case, mercenary science prevailed and papers on #glyphosate that should have been retracted because the authors lied were spared. The “studies” are still in print, misleading readers. #scienceforhire
